All Global Goods

OpenFn is the leading Digital Public Good for workflow automation. It’s used by governments and NGOs in 40+ countries to securely automate business processes, exchange critical information, and achieve interoperability.

While our end-beneficiaries are the people who get more efficient and effective healthcare thanks to automation on the platform, OpenFn’s users are health and IT professionals responsible for designing, managing, and delivering technology implementations that facilitate these health interventions. The technologies may include health information systems, disease surveillance systems, mobile data collection apps, SMS and messaging platforms, payment gateways, analytics tools, and many more tools common in digital health ecosystems.

OpenFn is used by 44+ organizations working across 40 countries, including government ministries in Thailand, Cambodia, and Ethiopia, UNICEF, and dozens of iNGOs. Since its inception in 2014, OpenFn has been designed to comply with open standards, can connect with any application, and provides more than 60 out-of-box adaptors to simplify integration with critical DPGs like DHIS2, CommCare, Kobo Toolbox, ODK, OpenMRS, RapidPro, and many more.

Standards & Interoperability

As a workflow automation tool typically used for data transformation and exchange, standards are not built-in to the app’s features, but rather the app provide features that enable implementers to automatically apply such health standards to data to be integrated. For example, an implementer may use OpenFn to extract data from a source health system, and map the data to a health standard before loading to another standards-compliant destination system.

As a workflow automation tool, OpenFn can be configured to adhere to IHE workflows. Out-of-box, OpenFn can support most of these workflows, assuming the target systems have an available REST API, database connection, or a mechanism for making CSV/JSON/XML file exports available. For some use cases, such as those that involve image transfer, custom development may be required in order to leverage OpenFn.

Sustainability

To date, Open Function Group has been the primary funder, using its SaaS revenue from its proprietary platform SaaS. More recently, advancement of the OpenFn DPG has been funded by grants.  Check out our Founder\'s blog post \"Becoming a Digital Global Good, Open Access, and Thoughts on OpenFn’s Long-Term Sustainability\": https://docs.openfn.org/blog/2021/03/30/digital-global-good/
